The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Hunt for Killer.

The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.

His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated late Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a search at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.

The assailant opened fire inside a room in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the news agency.

Officers that searched the inn found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the individual was arrested, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was released from the hospital, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, friends, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
