On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
