The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
