The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
