Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
