Japan's Economic Output Declines while Exports Face Impact by US Tariffs

Japan's economy has recorded a contraction for the initial time in a year and a half, mainly driven by weakening overseas shipments because of recent US tariffs.

G7 Growth Rankings

The Japanese economy stands as the initial G7 country to report an GDP decline in the previous quarter.

With the United States yet to release its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven economic rankings show:

  • France: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
  • United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
  • German economy: 0%
  • Italian economy: 0%
  • Japanese economy: -0.4%

Tourism Shares Slump amid Diplomatic Dispute with China

In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is dealing with an growing diplomatic tension with China regarding Taiwan.

Stocks in Japanese travel and retail businesses have dropped noticeably after China recommended its nationals to refrain from traveling to Japan.

This action by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was triggered by remarks from Japan's new prime minister about the potential of deploying forces in the case of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The development caused a surge of sell-offs across Japan's leisure shares.

  • Oriental Land shares dropped by 5.7 percent
  • The department store chain plummeted by 11.3 percent
  • Japan Airlines fell by 3.75%

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning advising against visits to Japan introduces short-term difficulties for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and hospitality particularly at risk."

Economic Decline Breakdown

Japan's gross domestic product fell by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial exports were hit by duties levied by the US recently.

Overseas shipments were a major factor of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.

Earlier this year, the US administration had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15% when the two nations reached a trade agreement.

Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP shrank by 1.8% in the quarter through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was strong in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP data showed that momentum is paused for now.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual growth trend going forward."

The White House has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, reducing tariffs on imported food products including beef, tomatoes, coffee and bananas amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
