Citizens have gathered around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the proposal.

A senior delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Future governance of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place seems like home now and until every captive are released no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israelis want the war to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said another two victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south region, health workers stated.
