Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
