Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
